Facebook Groups Bring the World Together

Facebook groups have a way of bringing together a community within a community. Especially in a time of need, they are ways to get everyone together to spark awareness. An important part of Facebook groups is the way the entire world can turn into a small community.

The Facebook Group, Carson confronts cancer, is a prime example of a group of people around the country to show support. Group creator and moderator, Sonya Thelen Meldahl, created this group as a way to keep friends and loved ones up to date with her sons pediatric cancer journey.

Carson attended high school with my two younger sisters, while I was away in college I joined the group to show support and keep up to date with events happening in the community to support the cause.

This group is successful because they have clear group rules from the admins:

This group was created in April 2020 and today has 20,000+ total members. People across the United States became enthralled by Carson’s story and resilience. His mother and other moderators constantly posted updates about his condition. Other group members would share words of encouragement during especially hard moments.

When Carson passed last month, Sonya did not want to close the group, she did not want this community too fizzle just because the journey has ended. She has turned ‘Carson confronts cancer’ into an organization to support pediatric cancer research.

This Facebook Group brought others with similar stories together. A member of the group took the initiative to shower Carson with gifts, she successful collected little gifts from all 50 states and Washington, D.C.

Even weeks after the passing of Carson, group members are still involved on the page. Sharing words of encouragement and prayers for the family. His mother recently posted about how the high school we attended dedicated a memorial to him on their property. This post just proved how much everyone came together to support this family, this is what Facebook Groups are all about.
